How do we know a student is ready for their next rank?

There is a difference between learning a technique and knowing a technique. The belt color changes to show how our understanding has improved. As the color changes, what has already been learned is expected to improve as well. Learning the required material does not mean that the student is ready to test for their next belt. It means the student must practice until it is determined that he/she is able to perform new material at an acceptable level, and that old material is maintained and improved. Testing is based on skill, attitude and heart; not on how long you have been that belt or how much you know. The bottom line here is better karate; it is achieved by more practice, not by how much material you have. Practicing makes your karate reactive and instinctive, as opposed to something we have to think about; this is when your karate becomes effective.
